![]() | Les articles traduits To prepare your hike and know how to locate yourself on a map you need to know how to pick up a direction. To pick up a geographical direction on a map start by tracing your route with a pencil and a ruler. Put your compass along the route you want to follow. Make sure it’s in the good direction, the arrow has to indicate the direction you want to follow. (unless you do that you will go exactly the opposite)
Turn the dial so that the lines at the back are parallel to the side of your map. If the sides of the map are too far try to pick up the bearings as for the first class raids. The position of the needle is not important at that point.
You can now read the geographical direction facing the mark of the compass. Here it’s 135° since the compass is graduated 2° by 2°. You can now convert the geographical direction in a magnetic direction which you will use for your hike.
